Benjamin Leonard Covington Wailes, b. 1 Aug 1797, d. 16 Nov 1862, was the grandson of Benjamin Wailes and Elizabeth Covington, and husband of Rebecca Covington, Leonard Covington's daughter. He compiled the Memoir of Leonard Covington Brigadier General U.S. Army , and had it ready to publish in 1861, a year before his death. Nellie Wailes Brandon, a descendent of this family, along with W.M.Drake, found the original manuscript and reproduced it. B.L.C. Wailes had wanted to distribute it to his "kinsmen and relatives" but production was ceased by threats of civil war. In 1928, according to the original plan of B.L.C. Wailes, the reproduced Memoir was distributed to "kinsmen and relatives." Leonard Covington b. 30 Oct 1768 was a descendant of Nehemiah Sr., b. 1628, England , who was the first Covington to come to America. He married Susannah Summerville, 22 Oct 1789 and settled down on his Paternal Acres in the avocation of planter. An obstinate Indian War was raging on the western frontier. The Treaty of Peace between Great Briton and America did not extend to the Indian Allies of Briton. Seeking to participate in settling the Indian Wars, Leonard Covington solicited and recieved from General George Washington a Commission of Coronet of the Light Dragoons, dated 4 March 1792. He became a great hero of the Revolutionary War, dying young of wounds suffered in battle. Almost all places throughout the country that are named Covington were named for this man. (The above comments, including the spelling of Great Briton (Britain), are an exact copy of the original notes.) |
